What is your background and why did you join FiBAN?
I worked the last six years at Vaaka Partners, a Finnish mid-market private equity firm. So, deal sourcing, deal execution and most of all growing the investments through a hands-on role including active board work is what I did and what I enjoy a lot. From Vaaka, I left to take on a project to transform our family business into a private investment company.
Currently, I’m also a minority owner and chairman of an exciting D2C startup that’s been built into a traditional industry with a new angle where sustainability principles form its core mission. Hopefully we are live with the service before the summer. 😊
I joined FiBAN for many reasons. I wanted to explore (for me) a new and exciting asset class: It has been very interesting getting to know many individuals, companies, founders and VCs. So, for me it has been about building a perspective of the ecosystem around early stage companies and investors.
What FiBAN activities have you been a part of? Why?
I have been to some screening sessions where the long list of FiBAN deal flow is distilled into a shorter list of companies that is then pitched to investors at FiBAN events. For me these sessions have been a fun way to just look at what type of deal flow is coming into FiBAN channels.
I would strongly recommend these sessions and especially for those who don’t have an investor background, because just going through the deal flow itself helps you to formulate your own investment criteria and gives you a sense of what type of different companies are out there.
What has been the most exciting thing at FiBAN?
I also visited Startup Day in Tartu on a trip that was organized by FiBAN. Again, exciting few days where I got to know some Estonian VCs and of course also many fun Finnish early stage investors.
What FiBAN free perk do you like the most?
The "credit rating protection" (fiban.org/ref.html) where you gain an investor status as a board member through FIBAn and Asiakastieto is a no regret move, for all investors in any board position.
Thank you Pontus for the interview and welcome to FiBAN!
