The Finnish business angel ecosystem is today one of the most active in Europe according to EBAN’s statistics. I’ve had the pleasure of working with FiBAN’s inspiring and energetic startup investors since our start in 2010 when the goal was to build a network to support and and share Finnish angel investing best practices. Today, over 600 members make FiBAN one of the largest and most active angel networks in Europe, even in the world.
It is therefore exciting to announce that I will be moving over from FiBAN to support the matching of angel investments on the Nordic level. Thanks FiBAN for an awesome ride, next Nordics, below why.
Next for angels - Nordic cross-border investing
One of the cornerstones of Finnish startup ecosystem is Slush. Held in November and gathering over 1000 startup investors, half of them business angels. It is interesting that globally, Slush is not considered as a Helsinki event, not even Finnish, but more as the main startup event of the Nordics. Nordics together plays a big part in the global startup ecosystem producing unicorns and positive exits. There is great cooperation among the Nordic&Baltic startup ecosystems united by co-activity #nordicmade. Also the Nordic venture capital investors have already united their strengths.
“Slush is not considered as a Helsinki event,

but more as the main startup event of the Nordics”
However, business angels are still lagging behind Nordic cooperation activity as the nature of angel investing has been more focused locally. This is also changing as angels look actively towards other Nordic and Baltic countries for new syndication possibilities and cooperation for scaling. A good example is NordicMakers, a group of +10 Swedish-Danish serial entrepreneurs now making syndicated group investments. Technology is already there supporting long-distance “cross-border” investing and what is left is to find co-investors you trust and want share risk with. For this we’ve built NordicBAN.
"I know most of the Nordic VCs,
but too few angels outside my own region -
it would be great to have more networking opportunities."
Nordic Business Angel Network
To support private startup investors finding more co-investment opportunities, we’ve gathered 11 Nordic angel networks (see picture below) to share angel investing best practices and support the matching of angel led cross-border investments. One of the main criteria for angels to make investments is not just to trust the team, but also have great faith in the other co-investors. NordicBAN will focus on matching Nordic&Baltic angels and discuss syndication opportunities. The Norwegian association works not-for-profit, independently driven by business angels.
Members of NordicBAN
The goal is to build a globally acknowledged network of recognized business angels, highlighting lead angel investors and expanding their businesses to other Nordic countries. The vision is to make the Nordics one of the most recognized and dynamic regions in the world for startups to receive business angels investments.
We are really excited and will soon publish closer details. You can already sign up for our Nordic angel newsletter at our site www.nordicban.net or follow us on Twitter @nordicban, Facebook and LinkedIn .
Thanks FiBAN once again for all the awesome years and I look forward to great cooperation on the Nordic level.
