There are some things in the very last week of the year that make it the perfect time for reflection. The busy autumn has ended in the Christmas celebration with the family, and the fresh new year has not started yet. In the few quiet days in between, there is time to think about the past year’s events and achievements, and start planning for new year’s resolutions.
In addition to many new exciting innovations, 2016 had its fair share of unexpected and tragic events. Many of us have become concerned and disappointed as international free trade, global integration, and liberal values among others have taken severe punches as the world around us has become more unstable and polarized. A pessimist might even wonder; weren’t we supposed to be well on our way to a safer, more equal, and overall better world?
It’s human nature to be concerned, when we’re in the middle of dramatic and unwanted changes. We easily see the changes as signs of a coming apocalypse, and fail to put them in their right perspective. However tragic the events might be, there is always also some positive opportunity opening, sooner or later.
Discovering these opportunities and making the best of a changed world is key to our business. Startups thrive in a changing world, whereas large corporations are successful in a slowly moving, steady world. When we reflect on 2016 and plan for 2017, let’s see the changes as new opportunities, and plan on how to make sure they lead to something even better than what we have now. We’re most successful ourselves when we drive change, rather than stay driven by it.
Wishing you a Most Successful New Year!
