What is your background and why did you join FiBAN?
I have helped companies to create business outside of Finland for more than 25 years. Board memberships of several companies in Finland and abroad gave me knowledge and network which I found useful for my next stage when leaving daily operational positions. I have been investing several companies both in Finland and outside without “real knowledge” other than learning by doing it. Some of these investments have been great and successful, and some really bad. Overall most of them have been in business for quite some time and scaling up for international markets. Very often their growth had been done with the help of VC and angel investments.
I did think seriously if I can learn more and maybe even start investing in early stage startups. Some of my friends being members of FiBAN invited me to participate in their activities and encouraged me to try investing together with more experienced investors.
Now some years later I am happy to share my own experience with you and your friends probably interested to join FiBAN.
What FiBAN activities have you been a part of? Why?
I have tried to share my time in FiBAN with following topics, just to get in the scene and better understand the angel investment topics. My learning experience in FiBAN has been very useful to create my own investment strategy.
1. FiBAN Academy
What has been the most important thing for you at FiBAN?
I have tried to learn as much as possible from my FiBAN friends together with FiBAN Academy training courses to create my own investment strategy. Also, NAP was very useful for me to learn and mingle with other Pan Nordic Angels.
But maybe the most important thing has been to learn from other FiBAN angels just to avoid typical mistakes in the beginning of my angel path.
What has been the most exciting thing at FiBAN?
I have been participating several angel visits last few years and during these travels I have got many new angel friends both from Finland and other countries. These travels have been well organized, and we have been able to learn many new things from very different markets such as Tel Aviv, Tartu, Reykjavik, Amsterdam and Copenhagen. Learning from these visits has been great and it is my recommendations also for all new angels to join these just to open your eyes, meet and network with other angels. These angel contacts are available later in case you need additional information of the certain technology, market or startup.
Finally, I will thank great FiBAN team to give me this opportunity to learn and join this Business Angel Path. Also special thanks to business angels Ari Korhonen, Teemu Varpanen, Reima Linnanvirta, Kim Väisänen for your guidance and great friendship which I really appreciate. It has been great time with all of you, looking forward to the future, as well!
